  34. PyCryptodome
  35. ============
  36. PyCryptodome is a self-contained Python package of low-level
  37. cryptographic primitives.
  38. It supports Python 2.7, Python 3.8 and newer, and PyPy.
  39. You can install it with::
  40. pip install pycryptodome
  41. All modules are installed under the ``Crypto`` package.
  42. Check the pycryptodomex_ project for the equivalent library that
  43. works under the ``Cryptodome`` package.
  44. PyCryptodome is a fork of PyCrypto. It brings several enhancements
  45. with respect to the last official version of PyCrypto (2.6.1),
  46. for instance:
  47. * Authenticated encryption modes (GCM, CCM, EAX, SIV, OCB, KW, KWP)
  48. * Hybrid Public Key Encryption (HPKE)
  49. * Accelerated AES on Intel platforms via AES-NI
  50. * First class support for PyPy
  51. * Elliptic curves cryptography (NIST P-curves; Ed25519, Ed448, Curve25519)
  52. * Better and more compact API (`nonce` and `iv` attributes for ciphers,
  53. automatic generation of random nonces and IVs, simplified CTR cipher mode,
  54. and more)
  55. * SHA-3 (including SHAKE XOFs) and BLAKE2 hash algorithms
  56. * Salsa20 and ChaCha20 stream ciphers
  57. * scrypt and HKDF
  58. * Deterministic (EC)DSA and EdDSA
  59. * Password-protected PKCS#8 key containers
  60. * Shamir's Secret Sharing scheme
  61. * Random numbers get sourced directly from the OS (and not from a CSPRNG in userspace)
  62. * Simplified install process, including better support for Windows
  63. * Cleaner RSA and DSA key generation (largely based on FIPS 186-4)
  64. * Major clean ups and simplification of the code base
  65. PyCryptodome is not a wrapper to a separate C library like *OpenSSL*.
  66. To the largest possible extent, algorithms are implemented in pure Python.
  67. Only the pieces that are extremely critical to performance (e.g. block ciphers)
  68. are implemented as C extensions.
